Sinatra “Best Of The Best” Featured On Sirius XM
“Sinatra: Best Of The Best” brings together Reprise and Capitol Records, and for the first time we have a single album that spans the length of Sinatra’s career. Previously Sinatra albums have been era specific. This album has literally been in the works in one form or another for almost a decade. With various entities holding various rights, it should not come as a surprise that the album has taken time to become a reality.
An event like this deserves special attention, and that is where Sirius XM steps in. Known for providing some of the most compelling content on radio, and already having a Sinatra channel of their own, it makes perfect sense that the satellite radio provider bring subscribers some exclusive content that simply is not available anywhere else.
This past Saturday Sirius XM had Frank Sinatra Jr. walks subscribers through selections from the new compilation album, Best of the Best, featuring many legendary performances by his father. The special hour of programming featured Frank Jr.’s intimate memories and delved into his consummate knowledge of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. If you missed the show, fear not. Sinatra was, and will aways be the standard by which all singers of popular music will be measured. He was literally in a class by himself. This “Best of The Best” is merely a repackaging of songs the Sinatra family has put out dozen’s of times over the years, so I won’t be getting it. It doesn’t represent his best work, and I could select a good 20 to 30 songs that are better than these. Some of the best stuff he ever did has never ended up on any compilation cd; why, I will never know. I have about 40 Sinatra cd’s, yet a good 15 to 20 of my favorite Sinatra recordings are not on any of them. He recorded over 1000 songs in his career, and many of his albums are classics. I guess iTunes is the only way to get some of his best recordings heretofore not made available.
I listened to the show, hosted by Frank Jr., and it was nothing all that special. If you want to really experience Sinatra, listen to “Sinatra at the Sand” with Count Basie, or any of his recordings with Antonio Carlos Jobim for example. Sheer perfection, and a reminder of what real singing, and singers are all about.
My how the world of entertainment has turned into a sea of mediocrity, inhabited by mostly lip syncing hacks who are adored by imbecilic morons who think Dancing with the Stars is real singing. The people in this country have an insatiable appetite for crap, therefor perpetuating the almighty junk culture that is destroying all of us!
Sinatra would be rolling in his grave if he knew how low peoples standards have sunk, and what constitutes a “singer” these days (nice rack… add some auto tune, and shake that money maker).
Sinatra at the Sands, that is!
I really enjoy the Sinatra channel on XM from time to time, but I am sick of hearing certain songs like “Chicago, Chicago” every hour it seems like. The song is being overplayed. Also, stop playing Rod Stewart –Yuck! He has his place in musical history but doesn’t belong on this channel no matter what he’s singing.
